One of the most anticipated games of the year will take place Friday night when Lee County hosts Colquitt County. Both teams have matching 6-0 records and spots in the Georgia Sports Writers Association High School Football Poll where Lee was ranked No. 8 recently and Colquitt was the consensus No. 1. The Packers were also ranked No. 7 in the nation by MaxPreps.
Lee’s toughest task to date will be trying to stop the Rush Propst- led Packer offense that scores an average of 47 points per game.
“We realize what Colquitt has and we are going to prepare hard for it like we have ever since the summer,” Lee quarterback Garet Morrell said.
The Trojans possess a stout defense that has only allowed double digits once this year. They also forced six turnovers in their most recent game against Tift.
“I was real proud of them tonight. Hopefully we can keep it up,” Lee coach Dean Fabrizio said after beating Tift. “We know what we’ve got next week. We’ve got one of the best teams, if not the best team in the nation in Colquitt County coming in here. We are going to enjoy this one tonight, get ourselves refocused and get ready for next week.”
Westwood gets second win in a row
The Wildcats outlasted Tiftarea 14-6 in a game that was played in soggy conditions.
“The weather really played a role. That can be the big equalizer,” Westwood coach Ross Worsham said. “We didn’t throw the ball much. We were moving the ball by running it. I thought we could have scored another time or two, but we did run it effectively and kept it away from them.”
The Wildcats have put together a small two-game winning streak since losing to Deerfield-Windsor 52-16 and are now 3-3 on the year, 2-1 in the GISA Region 3-AAA standings
“We played hard against Terrell (Academy) last week … we played hard and got that one and I think it just gave us a little bit of momentum,” Worsham said. “The kids started believing a little bit that if they get after it, they’ve got a shot.”
Worsham and his squad will look to keep the streak going when they welcome Valwood (5-1) next Saturday at Centennial Stadium.
Worth County’s early losses helping team
The Worth County Rams seem to have hit their stride winning after beating Dougherty 49-0. Worth has now won their last three games after dropping the first two.
The defense has stepped up, shutting out two of their last three opponents.
“We are really coming together as a unit,” Worth coach Jason Tone said. “They are running to the ball and creating some opportunities for ourselves as far as tackles for losses and turnovers.”
Worth had three interceptions against the Trojans and barely allowed Cairo to cross midfield last week.
The Rams only losses have come against Fitzgerald and Lee County, both of whom are now 6-0.
“Our kids are smart enough to know that we were in those ballgames and had an opportunity, but just weren’t able to finish,” Tone said. “We played those tough games early to give us the best chance to succeed come region time.”
Worth heads to Bainbridge to face the 6-0 Bearcats next week in a game that could decide the Region 1-AAAA ‘B’ subregion representative.
