CAMILLA – Wearing a blue sport coat and orange tie that matched the colors of his future school, Mitchell County’s Quintin Sanders put pen to paper Thursday morning at Mitchell County High School.

The Eagles standout and a member of the Albany Herald’s Dynamite Dozen team signed with Savannah State University where he will play on the defensive line, a spot he excelled at in high school.

During his career, Sanders played on both the offensive and defensive line for the Eagles. He finished with 152 total tackles including 12 for loss, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

“It is very exciting to have this done,” Sanders said. “The process was really long. All the coaches calling and trying to get you to decommit from the school you already committed to. I stuck to my word and I did it.”

Louisiana-Lafayette made a late push for Sanders, sending him an offer just last week. He also received offers from Valdosta State, Tulane and Florida A&M.

“(Savannah State) stayed beside me through it all,” Sanders said. “With the knee injury and everything else they stuck with me. Not knocking Louisiana, I think Savannah was the best choice.”

Sanders, who got the blue sport coat for the special occasion, joins 14 other players who signed with Savannah State and is one of two that came from Georgia. The Tigers managed to sign three-star running back Deshawn Smith from Nature Coast Technical High School in Brooksville, Fla.

“They may not have had a winning record last year, but with the recruits we got this year, I think we will,” Sanders said. “It is exciting to think about the great players I’m playing with and will be going against.”

Playing college football at the next level has been a dream for Sanders.

“It really has been a dream of mine,” Sanders said. “Since I was three years old, I used to play football in the backyard.”
