Alliance of American Football co-founder Bill Polian revealed Thursday that the new league, which just completed its first week of play, had interest in adding quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has not played professionally since the end of the 2016 NFL season.

According to Lindsay Jones of The Athletic, Polian said that AAF CEO Charlie Ebersol had reached out to Kaepernick at some point about playing in the eight-team league.

“I don’t know what transpired, but he’s obviously not playing,” Polian said.

It was previously reported that Polian reached out to former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, who declined an invitation to play.

Kaepernick was playing for the San Francisco 49ers when he took a knee during the National Anthem as part of his awareness campaign to bring attention toward the mistreatment of “people of color.” The move ignited a lengthy debate that continues long after he last set foot on an NFL field.

Kaepernick’s lawyer Mark Geragos said in advance of this year’s Super Bowl that his client still has hopes of playing again in the NFL.
