Reports: Trenton Thompson reaches deal with Cleveland Browns
From Staff Reports
The Cleveland Browns will give Westover graduate Trenton Thompson a shot at playing in the NFL.
According to multiple published reports, Thompson, a defensive tackle who left Georgia a year early for the NFL only to go undrafted, will join the Browns as an undrafted free agent in a deal reached late Saturday.
NFL.com did not list defensive line as a draft need for the Browns in the website’s draft analysis. The Browns did not take a defensive tackle in the draft, and the only two front seven players they drafted were Miami defensive end Chad Thomas in the third round and Memphis inside linebacker Genard Avery in the fifth round.
In 2017, the Browns took Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett with the No. 1 overall pick. They also took Charlotte defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi in the third round and Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley in the sixth round.
Currently, the Browns’ starting defensive tackle spots are occupied by a couple of second-year players, with one also taking the undrafted route to the NFL.
Ogunjobi played in 14 games last year and is projected to start this fall, according to ESPN.com in a March 15 article. Trevon Coley, who played in 15 games last year as an undrafted player out of Florida Atlantic, was listed as the other projected starting defensive tackle in the Browns’ 4-3 set.
The Browns had 10 defensive linemen listed on their roster Sunday afternoon, not counting Thompson. None have more than five years of NFL experience.
