LEESBURG — The script called for nerves. A freshman wrote a finish.
With the Red Bracket championship teetering Wednesday night at the Lee County Roundball Classic, the Monroe Golden Tornadoes trusted a ninth-grader to decide it — and Robert Adams delivered, lifting Monroe to a 50-49 victory over the Long County Blue Tide.
Adams’ moment came with 18 seconds left and bodies everywhere. Fighting through three defenders beneath the rim, the freshman banked in a tying basket while absorbing contact. The whistle sounded. The gym paused. And Adams calmly stepped to the line and knocked down the free throw that put Monroe ahead for good.
Long County had one last look, but Jamere Martin’s off-balance shot at the buzzer bounced harmlessly away, sealing Monroe’s eighth straight win and a hard-earned tournament title.
The ending matched the tension that defined the night.
Neither team ever found daylight. Monroe edged ahead 24-23 at halftime in a defensive grind that felt more like February than December. The Blue Tide surged in the third quarter behind Martin, a senior shooting guard who buried three straight 3-pointers to flip the lead and inject urgency into the game.
Monroe never panicked. The Golden Tornadoes leaned on defense, limited second chances, and crept within 39-37 heading into the final quarter — close enough to strike.
A basket by Hiram Holloway gave Monroe a brief 47-45 lead, only for Long County to answer with two quick scores to go back in front 49-47 with just over a minute remaining. That’s when Monroe head coach Michael Hoffpauir gathered his team — and made the decision that decided the championship.
Adams, who had sparked Monroe earlier in the third quarter before heading to the bench following a verbal exchange with Martin, was back on the floor. The play was designed for him. The freshman rewarded that trust with poise beyond his years.
Senior Brayden Burns shouldered the offensive load all night, scoring 22 points and earning tournament MVP honors. Tristen Terry added nine points and joined Burns on the All-Tournament team.

For Monroe, the celebration was brief but meaningful — the kind of win that hardens a team. The Golden Tornadoes open region play Friday night at home against crosstown rival Dougherty Trojans, carrying with them the confidence that comes from trusting the moment — and the player — when it matters most.
