ALBANY — Sherwood Christian Academy’s girls soccer team is shooting for its fourth consecutive state title on Friday after its 2-0 win Tuesday evening that propelled it to the final.
Sherwood, which competes in Division 1 of the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association, will face Young Americans Christian School in the championship match.
Molly McClern scored the two goals Sherwood needed to earn a berth in the title game. Sherwood, seeded No. 1 in the South bracket, defeated Creekside Christian Academy, ranked No. 2 in the South, Tuesday on Sherwood’s home field.
That win came after the Lady Eagles defeated No. 4 seed Community Christian Academy on Friday in the opening round.
It will be a match-up of No. 1 seeds in the title match. Young Americans Christian was seeded first in the North bracket, defeating No. 4 seed Skipstone Academy on Saturday and No. 2 North team Calvary Christian School on Tuesday on its way to qualifying to face Sherwood.
Sherwood defeated Creekside Christian last year to claim its second straight GICAA crown. It won its first state championship in 2014, the last year in which the Lady Eagles competed in the Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA).
The Lady Eagles will meet Young Americans on a neutral field in the championship tilt. The match is set to be played at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton.
NOTE: After its 6-4 overtime win Tuesday, Lee County High School hosts Creekside High School at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Elite 8 round of the AAAAAA Georgia High School Association girls soccer playoffs.
