ALBANY — Two of Sherwood Christian’s most accomplished athletes will continue playing at the next level.
Soccer standouts Aubri Hughes and Dylan Evans signed letters of intent to continue their careers at Bryan College Wednesday morning.
The night before the signing, both athletes were given the top senior athlete award at the school’s athletic banquet. The award is given to the boy and girl who contributes the most to the Sherwood athletic program during their high school years.
“Today is very exciting,” Evans said. “I grew up wanting to play college soccer. It is kind of surreal that this moment is actually happening.”
Evans, who was also the quarterback on the football team, was a captain of the soccer team and one of the Eagles’ most productive players. He also received interest from Brewton-Parker, Point University and Truett-McConnell but ultimately decided on Bryan.
“When I visited, I loved the coach,” Evans said. “I loved the players I met and the campus as a whole. Everyone seemed to be so real. That was the biggest draw for me.”
For Hughes, the accomplishment is something she never thought would happen. She suffered a concussion a year and a half ago after hitting the back of her head during a game.
She was forced to sit out after suffering the injury and was not medically cleared until just before this season.
“This is a really big deal,” Hughes said. “I had been out so long with a head injury. For me to sign and be able to play college soccer is a dream come true.”
The senior admitted that she was doubtful she would play college soccer after the concussion.
“It really just shows how great God is,” Hughes said. “It shows how God can move mountains.”
Hughes leaves Sherwood having won three straight state titles, the last two of which came in the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association. The Lady Eagles won their most recent this past weekend with a 1-0 victory over Creekside Christian.
