Sherwood’s Will Moorehead wins fourth state tennis championship

MACON — Sherwood Christian senior Will Moorehead captured his fourth individual state tennis championship Tuesday at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center in Macon, while his younger brother Sam teamed up with Logan Sadler to win the doubles state title, giving Sherwood a sweep of the top boys’ honors.

Moorehead won three state championships while Sherwood Christian competed in the GAPPS conference. His fourth title comes under the GIAA banner after the school transitioned to the new association last year. He dominated the tournament, dropping just seven games across three matches.

In addition to his four singles championships, Moorehead has also contributed to four team titles. He will go for his ninth career state title next week when Sherwood competes in the GIAA team tournament, also in Macon. Remarkably, Moorehead has never lost a match in his four-year high school tennis career.

“I am excited to get two more state championships for our school,” said Sherwood Athletic Director Jay Flynt. “But I’m especially excited for Will Moorehead, and for him capping off another state championship as he ends his high school career undefeated.”

In the doubles final, Sam Moorehead and Logan Sadler earned their title in a hard-fought match. After winning the first set 6-1, they dropped the second set 7-6 before battling to a 10-7 victory in the decisive tiebreaker.
