Smart, Bulldogs reflect on Texas win, turn focus to Florida

ATHENS, Ga. – After a thrilling victory over No. 1-ranked Texas, the No. 2-ranked University of Georgia Bulldogs are using their bye week to regroup and refine. Head Coach Kirby Smart, junior defensive back Daylen Everette, and redshirt junior offensive lineman Dylan Fairchild spoke to the media Tuesday, reflecting on the win and looking ahead to their rivalry game against the Florida Gators.

“We had a good practice today, focusing on ourselves and targeting areas where we can improve on offense, defense, and special teams,” Smart said. “We also did some quality control work and began preparing for Florida.”

Smart acknowledged the challenges faced by Georgia’s young secondary, a unit that has shown progress but remains a work in progress.

“We’ve been a work in progress,” Smart said. “With three starters from last year now in the NFL, we’re young and still growing. But I’m pleased with how hard the guys are working and competing.”

One of the most scrutinized moments in the Texas game involved two targeting calls, which Smart addressed carefully.

“Both were really close, borderline situations,” he said. “The game is focused on safety, and we have to make sure our players are keeping that in mind.”

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will face a challenging five-game stretch to close the season, beginning with the annual showdown against Florida after the bye week. Smart emphasized the resilience his team has displayed in crucial moments.

“Our offense has responded every time they’ve been challenged, especially in the second half of games,” Smart said. “That’s a quality not all teams have.”

Everette, who had a key role in the defense against Texas, praised the team’s resilience and readiness.

“We go against our offense every day in practice, so there was no doubt they would get the job done,” Everette said, referring to the Bulldogs’ final touchdown drive that secured the victory.

Fairchild, reflecting on the physical nature of the Texas game, stressed the importance of staying focused despite challenges.

“Things won’t always go our way, but that’s why it’s a team sport,” Fairchild said. “It’s our job to pick each other up and keep the ball rolling.”

As the Bulldogs wind down their bye week, their focus now shifts to maintaining momentum ahead of their pivotal clash against Florida, a game that could define the remainder of their season.
