Softball Round Up: Deerfield-Windsor wins; Terrell Aca. falls

CAMILLA — Deerfield-Windsor’s offense broke loose Monday, scoring 15 runs over the final two innings to defeat Westwood 21-15 and end a five-game losing streak.

Mary Ruth Courtney led the Lady Knights with four hits and six RBIs, including run-scoring doubles in the sixth and seventh innings. She also earned the victory in the circle as Deerfield-Windsor survived a high-scoring game that featured 24 hits and eight defensive errors.

“We had 13 hits and we walked 12 times,” Deerfield-Windsor coach Dwayne Suggs said. “Our pitchers threw the ball well tonight, but our defense wasn’t on cue tonight as we kicked it around a lot. We’ve got some work to do to improve and get better in different areas of the game.”

Deerfield-Windsor took advantage of two Westwood errors to score four runs in the first inning, but the Lady Wildcats answered with a two-run homer by Lanier and moved ahead 5-4 in the second.

The Lady Knights regained the lead in the third before Westwood tied the game at 6 in the fourth.

The game remained tied until Deerfield-Windsor erupted in the sixth. The Lady Knights sent nine runs across on seven hits, with Courtney’s two-run double providing the biggest blow and giving them a 15-6 advantage.

Deerfield-Windsor added six more runs in the seventh. Emily Phillips drew a bases-loaded walk, Marin Anthony delivered an RBI single and Courtney cleared the bases with a three-run double.

Westwood scored nine times over the final two innings but could not overcome Deerfield-Windsor’s late surge.

Courtney pitched six innings, allowing 10 runs—five earned—on eight hits while striking out four and walking three. Aubrey Ross worked in relief.

Jennings Curington and Anthony joined Courtney with multiple hits. Kambell Mitchell drew three of Deerfield-Windsor’s 12 walks, while Anthony stole two bases. The Lady Knights finished with eight stolen bases.

Westwood collected 11 hits. Lanier went 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs, while Gray finished with three hits.

Terrell Academy falls at Calvary Christian

COLUMBUS — Blakely Aultman collected three hits, but Terrell Academy could not overcome an early deficit in a 9-5 loss to Calvary Christian on Monday.

Calvary Christian scored three runs in the first inning and extended its lead to 4-2 in the second. Mckelvey’s two-run homer in the third helped the Lady Knights take control.

Aultman went 3-for-4 with singles in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Alyssa Godwin added two hits for Terrell Academy.

Caroline Presley pitched six innings for the Lady Eagles, allowing nine runs—five earned—on nine hits and two walks.

Spann led Calvary Christian with three hits, while Gumm and Mckelvey drove in two runs apiece. Calvary Christian also stole five bases.

Terrell Academy will return home Thursday to face Tiftarea Academy.
