Softball RoundUp: Brooks edges Lady Knights, Monroe splits, Lee, Westover and Terrell Aca. win

ALBANY – Deerfield-Windsor scored nine runs in the first inning, watched an eight-run lead disappear, then staged a six-run rally to regain the lead.

And somehow, there was still one more twist.

Brooks County scored in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday to escape with a wild 17-16 victory over the Lady Knights.

Deerfield-Windsor outhit Brooks County 12-10 and led 10-2 after two innings, but couldn’t put away the Lady Trojans.

Brooks County struck first with two runs in the top of the first before Deerfield-Windsor’s offense erupted.

The Lady Knights sent nine runs across in the bottom of the inning on six hits. Millie Champion delivered one of the biggest blows with a two-run single, helping Deerfield take a 9-2 advantage.

Mary Ruth Courtney’s RBI single in the second stretched the lead to 10-2.

Then everything changed.

Brooks County scored eight times in the third to tie the game and added four more in the fourth to build a 14-10 advantage.

This time it was Deerfield-Windsor’s turn to rally.

The Lady Knights exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Emily Phillips delivered an RBI single before Jennings Curington and Claire Hockman each drew bases-loaded walks. Anna Beth Brady followed with a two-run double, and Reynolds Bryson’s RBI single completed the comeback and gave Deerfield-Windsor a 16-14 lead.

But the lead didn’t hold.

Brooks County battled back again and ultimately went ahead 17-16 when Macie Wilson delivered an RBI single in the seventh.

Courtney led Deerfield-Windsor with three hits, while Brady went 2-for-4 and drove in a team-high three runs. Champion added two hits.

The Lady Knights also drew 10 walks and stole six bases.

Courtney worked six innings in the circle, allowing 11 runs — eight earned — on eight hits while striking out six and walking five.

Deerfield-Windsor will host Flint River Monday at 4 p.m.

Monroe splits slugfest-filled doubleheader

ALBANY – There wasn’t much pitching room for error when Monroe and Randolph-Clay got together Tuesday.

The teams combined for 65 runs in two games, with Monroe winning the opener 14-12 before Randolph-Clay captured the second game 20-19.

The split left the Lady Tornadoes at 4-1.

In the opener, Ariya Lee delivered three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run inside-the-park homer, as Monroe finished with 16 hits.

The Lady Tornadoes led 7-4 after two innings, but Randolph-Clay battled back and eventually tied the game 9-9.

Monroe finally took control with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth. Lee’s RBI single broke the tie and helped the Lady Tornadoes build a 14-9 advantage before holding off a final Randolph-Clay rally.

Jamiya Duhart also had three hits and three RBIs, while Nariah Tinch, Glendalys Harvey, Raquel Timley, Desarae Johnson and Trinty Toomer each collected multiple hits.

The second game was even wilder.

Monroe pounded out 19 hits and scored 19 runs but couldn’t complete the sweep.

Harvey had a huge game at the plate, going 5-for-5 with three doubles and a triple. Monroe scored five runs in the first, four in the second and four more in the third.

Randolph-Clay kept coming, however, scoring five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before rallying to tie the game in the seventh and eventually earning the 20-19 victory.

Lee, Harvey, Timley, Layla Clay and Duhart each drove in two runs for Monroe, which stole 12 bases.

Monroe will begin region play Tuesday when they host Columbus at Gordon Park. Game time is 5 p.m.

Lee County 4, Colquitt County 1

MOULTRIE – Tina Benton delivered Lee County’s best pitching performance of the young season as the Lady Trojans earned a 4-1 road victory over Colquitt County.

Benton threw a complete game, limiting the Lady Packers to five hits and one unearned run over seven innings. She struck out eight and walked three as Lee County improved to 2-1.

The Lady Trojans took the lead with a run in the third before Makinley Duke provided the biggest swing of the game in the fifth, blasting a two-run homer to left field with two strikes.

Lee County finished with 11 hits. Porter Butler went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot, while Mac Davis and Brylyn Parsons each had multiple hits.

Lee County begins region competition Tuesday at home against Thomas County Central. First pitch is planned for 5 p.m.

Westover 14, Carver-Columbus 2

ALBANY – Timeria Neal drove in four runs and Westover used an eight-run second inning to overwhelm Carver-Columbus 14-2.

Neal had an RBI single in the first before delivering the biggest blow of the game with a three-run inside-the-park homer during Westover’s second-inning outburst.

Morgan Polite and Ma’Lyisha Washington added run-scoring doubles in the second, while Polite and Janiyah Winslow had RBI doubles as Westover tacked on three more runs in the third.

Chamya Astin earned the victory in the circle, allowing no hits and one unearned run over three innings.

Neal and Polite each had two hits, while the Lady Patriots stole 10 bases.

Westover begins region play by hosting Bainbridge Tuesday at Gordon Park. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.

Terrell Academy 12, Southland Academy 3

DAWSON – Jacey Lane drove in four runs and Terrell Academy collected 15 hits in a 12-3 victory over Southland Academy.

Southland jumped ahead 2-0 in the first, but the Lady Eagles tied the game in the second before taking control in the third.

Lane singled home a run, Blakely Aultman delivered an RBI double and Jaelynn Oliver added a run-scoring single as Terrell Academy moved in front.

Lane finished with three hits, including a two-run double in the sixth. Lily Addison also had three hits, while Aultman, Oliver and Michaela Zingerelli each had multiple hits.

Aultman earned the win, allowing five hits and three runs — two earned — over six innings. She struck out four and walked two.

The Lady Eagles are on the road this week with games at Brookwood and Westwood. They will be home again on August 24th when defending state champion SGA comes to Dawson.
