Albany State men win SIAC opener

The Albany State men’s basketball team opened SIAC Tournament play Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama, with a 92-79 win over Kentucky State.

Leading by one at halftime, Albany State, the No. 6 seed from the Eastern Division, outscored Kentucky State, the No. 3 seed from the Western Division, 52-40 in the second half to secure the first-round win.

Randy McClure scored 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds, making 9-of-13 from the field and 9-of-11 free throws, to pace Albany State (7-21). Five players finished in double-figures, with Jared Harrington scoring 16, Tylen Walker 13, Michael Green 12 and Rahdin Hughes 11.

David Jelks and Ray Croon each scored 19 to lead Kentucky State (9-18).

Albany State takes on Clark Atlanta, the No. 2 seed from the East, at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Preceding that game at 5:30 p.m. will be the Albany State women’s quarterfinal game against Kentucky State.

ASU baseball clips Thomas

Albany State’s baseball team scored three runs in the first two innings en route to a 5-2 victory Tuesday over Thomas.

Riliani Familia went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, a run scored and three RBI, while Albany State teammate Quan Dodson-Williams went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.

Tyler Wilcher picked up the win, striking out five and walking one while allowing four hits in seven shutout innings.

Jalbert Melo and Levi Hollingsworth each had two hits for Thomas.

Cairo tops Worth County

A four-run sixth inning Wednesday gave Cairo the runs it needed to defeat Worth County’s baseball team 4-2.

Cason King went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Worth County. Jeremiah Reddell took the loss despite striking out nine.

Deerfield-Windsor edges Westover

Clarke Sullivan’s base hit to center drove home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday as Deerfield-Windsor’s baseball team defeated Westover 5-4.

Sullivan went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a double, to pace Deerfield-Windsor. Baylin Moore and Cole Mitchell also had doubles.

La’Borris Buchanan went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for Westover, with De’Juan Canty going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Lee County baseball falls

Cory Newsome turned in a four-hit, 10-strikeout complete game Tuesday as Colquitt County baseball shut out Lee County 4-0 on Tuesday.

Lee County committed three errors in the loss. The Trojans take part in the Georgia Peach Invitational this weekend at Parkview and Loganville.

Terrell Academy prevails

Terrell Academy edged Southland 4-3 in Dawson on Tuesday. It was the season opener for both squads.

Three Terrell Academy pitchers combined for a five-hitter with only one walk issued. Garrett Sloan picked up the save in relief of Daniel Myers and Cameron Jones.

Seminole County blanks Pelham

A six-run first inning set the tone for Pelham baseball’s 10-0 loss to Seminole County on Tuesday.

Pelham managed just two hits in the five-inning loss.
