ASU soccer wins for first time
The Albany State soccer team posted its first win in two years of operation Monday, defeating Shorter 2-1 in Rome.
A first-year NCAA program last year following the merger of Albany State and Darton State, the ASU soccer team (1-1-0) picked up goals from Jenna Wade and Alexus Lawson to post its first win following 14 non-winning results.
Lawson’s game-winner came at the 51:06 mark when she headed a Marisol Estrada pass into the net. Wade’s goal seven minutes in was ASU’s first goal of the season, while Shorter tied things less than three minutes before halftime on a Kristina Evans goal.
Shorter outshot ASU 20-9, with Albany State claiming a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. ASU’s Abby Whiteside made seven saves.
ASU has three home matches coming up, starting with a 7 p.m. contest Friday against West Florida. West Alabama visits Sunday in a 1 p.m. match, with ASU hosting Daytona State at 5 p.m. next Tuesday.
