Benefit tennis tournament slated for this weekend

The Southwest Georgia Council on Aging will conduct the Serving Up Meals tennis tournament this weekend at Doublegate Country Club.

The three-day doubles tournament benefiting Meals on Wheels begins Friday with a free junior clinic at 5:30 p.m., with matches slated for a 6 p.m. start.

Following play Saturday, there will be a “Margaritas and Munchies” adult player party at 5:30 p.m. at the club. Admission is free for registered players, with guests asked to make a donation to Meals on Wheels.

Championship matches will take place Sunday.

Georgia-Florida League set to start

Eight teams, including one from Albany, are scheduled to take part in the Georgia-Florida League’s preseason baseball showcase Sunday at Corey Field in Quincy, Florida.

The Albany Squad is scheduled to take on the Tallahassee Rays at 3 p.m. in the day’s third game. The Jefferson A’s and the Tallahassee Bombers start the day’s action at 10:30 a.m., followed by the CC Warriors and the Tallahassee Rangers at 12:45 p.m. The day’s final game, scheduled for 5:15 p.m., is the Quincy Dodgers against the Gadsden County Cardinals.

Admission ($2 adults, $1 ages 7-12, free 6 and under) will be charged at the gate.

The Georgia-Florida League is an independent semi-pro organization. The regular season is set to begin April 22.

Open Bible tops Sherwood Christian

The Open Bible baseball team defeated Sherwood Christian 6-1 on Monday.

Patrick Burke went 2-for-4 for Sherwood.

Hawks’ Delaney undergoes ankle surgery

Atlanta Hawks guard Malcolm Delaney underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle on Monday, the team announced.

The Hawks said the expected recovery time is six to eight weeks.

Delaney hasn’t played since March 4 due to the ankle.

Delaney, 29, averaged 6.3 points and 3.0 assists in 54 games this season.

Delaney is slated to become a free agent in July.
