Crisp County baseball beats Worth County

The Worth County Rams baseball team couldn’t push enough runs across in a 7-4 loss at Crisp County Friday night. The loss puts the Rams in serious jeopardy of missing out on the postseason.

It was a good day at the plate for Worth County’s Hunter Goodwin, who went 3 for 4 and drove in a run. He singled in the second, third, and fifth innings.

Jake Jones allowed two earned run in 5 1/3 innings, walked eight and struck out 10 and was stung with a tough loss.

Crisp County never surrendered the lead after the first inning, scoring three runs on a two-run single by Brennan Bledsoe.

After pushing across two runs in the top of the third, the Rams faced just a 4-2 deficit. A sacrifice fly by Jones and an RBI single by Goodwin gave Worth County life. But the Cougars were able to escape the threat.

Crisp County quickly matched the Rams’ strong inning with a three-run inning of its own in the third. Crisp County scored on an RBI single by Chase Yawn and a two-run error.

A two-run fifth inning helped bring the Worth County Rams within three. An RBI single by Goodwin and a fielder’s choice triggered the Rams’ comeback. But that was as close as the Rams could get.

Westwood baseball beats Tiftarea

The Westwood Wildcats baseball team beat Tiftarea 6-0 in GISA Region 3-AAA play Friday night. Senior Collier Baggett earned the complete-game victory on the mound, allowing just four hits and throwing 84 pitches.

The senior also helped his own cause at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Tanner Stanaland and Javen Parten also had two RBIs each on two hits, which scored six different Westwood players.

Westwood evens its record at 6-6 and plays host to Deerfield-Windsor on Tuesday.

Deerfield-Windsor tennis teams beat Baconton Charter

The Deerfield-Windsor tennis teams took easy victories over Baconton Charter Thursday afternoon. The Lady Knights took a 5-0 victory to improve to 8-4 on the season, while the Knights also won 5-0 and improved to 8-4 overall.

In girls action, Sarah Perrine defeated Susan Bankston 6-1, 6-0 at at No. 1 singles, Emma Reed defeated Jodie Scott 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Abby Ellis defeated Bethany High 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.

In doubles play, Gabby Pinnero and Stephanie Mathes defeated Baconton’s No. 1 team of E. Everson/A. Meyer, 6-0, 6-1. Deerfield’s No. 2 team of Haley Hallford and Rebekah Thomas defeated Baconton’s J. Scott/M. Watson 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

In boys singles, Brandon O’Brien defeated Max Deen 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), Cohen Bonner defeated Devin Wimberly 7-6, (7-1), 6-4, while Bo Williams defeated John Godwin 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles play, Deerfield-Windsor’s No. 1 team of Tyler Lowe and P. Hill defeated Baconton’s Z. Deen/T. Goodman 6-2, 6-2, while Fletcher Cromartie and Reed Reynolds defeated K. Hamilton/B. Carden 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.

Deerfield-Windsor will host the GISA Region 3-AAA Tournament at Darton State College starting at 10 a.m. The semifinals and finals will be played on Tuesday starting at 10 a.m.
