Darton to host Cavalier Celebration
Darton State College will hold its Cavalier celebration on Friday. There will be live music, concessions and games for the kids. The Cavaliers will play ABAC in baseball at 6 p.m. Admission to the baseball game will be free.
There will be fireworks at 8:45 p.m. with a 5K walk/run at 9:15 p.m. All participants must register at www.raceroster.com. The cost for the 5K is $25 for participants who pre-register, $30 on race day.
Sherwood girls soccer win region
The Sherwood Christian girls soccer team captured the region title Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over Calvary Christian. Maddie Allen, Molly Kate McClearn and Aubri Hughes scored goals for the Lady Eagles, who will get a bye into the semifinals of the Georgia Christian Athletic Association state tournament. They will play their semifinal match next Monday or Tuesday.
Darton baseball falls to ABAC
The Darton State College baseball team fell to ABAC 3-1 Tuesday night. The loss overshadowed a strong performance from pitcher Sam Goberdhan, who allowed just one earned run in eight innings.
Kendall Herron went 2 for 4 with a triple and two stolen bases. Colton Thomas went 4 for 5 with three stolen bases.
The Cavaliers will play host to ABAC Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Albany State’s Wimbish named SIAC freshman of the year
The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has released its 2016 SIAC All-Conference Baseball Team. Albany State freshman Kelvin Wimbish has been named the league’s Freshman of the Year.
Wimbish, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound shortstop from Ellenwood, Ga., posted a .294 batting average for the Rams during his rookie season. He finished the regular season with 37 hits, 24 runs, 21 RBIs, and three doubles. Wimbish is 9 of 13 in stolen bases and yields a fielding percentage of .912.
Ga. Southern Caravan to make stop in Tifton
The Georgia Southern Coaches Caravan will stop in Tifton on Thursday night at the Spring Hill Country Club at 6:30 p.m. Georgia Southern first-year coach Tyson Summers, a Tifton native, and assistant men’s basketball coach Larry Dixon as well as other members of the Eagles’ athletic administration will be in attendance.
Raffle prizes will include a Coach Summers autographed football and pregame sideline passes to a home football game.
There is no charge for the event.
Knights of Columbus to host May 7 golf tournament
The 19th annual Knights of Columbus charity golf tournament will be held May 7 at the Griffin Bell Golf Course in Americus. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by door prizes at 8:00 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The format is a four-player scramble and each player’s tee shot must be used twice. The $60 entry fee includes golf, cart, range balls, lunch and drinks. Mulligans are available for $5 each.

Reader’s Cup Golf Tournament to be held May 16
The fifth annual Reader’s Cup Golf Tournament will be held May 16 at the River Pointe Golf Course. Registration begins at 11 a.m. followed by lunch at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The format will be a four-person scramble.
The $60 entry fee includes golf and range, prizes, lunch, beverages (tea/coffee) and snacks at award ceremony.
