Mercer overwhelms Toccoa Falls
The Mercer men’s basketball team overpowered the Toccoa Falls Screaming Eagles 110-43 in the Bears’ home opener Sunday afternoon in Macon.
Mercer relied on balanced scoring and a ball-hawking defense to post its first win of the young season, according to a release from the university. Senior guard Ria’n Holland led the way with 16 points, including 14 in the first half.
Holland, who was celebrating his 23rd birthday Sunday, was one of four Bears to go for double-figures. Senior forward Demetre Rivers and sophomore Ethan Stair also scored in double-digits, putting up 12 points apiece, while junior Ryan Johnson contributed 11 points.
The Bears finished the opening half on an impressive 42-9 run, entering the break holding a commanding 57-19 lead. Mercer continued to dominate throughout the second half, outscoring the Screaming Eagles 52-24.
Hawks fall to Wizards
Markieff Morris isn’t ready to declare the team defensive problems fixed, but the Washington Wizards are looking better on both ends of the court with the power forward finding his form.
Bradley Beal scored 19 points and Morris had 18 as the Washington Wizards rolled past the Atlanta Hawks for a 113-94 victory on Saturday night.
Kelly Oubre Jr. also had 18 points for the Wizards (7-5), who won back-to-back games for the first time since opening the season 3-0. Washington shot 53.8 percent from the field and led by as many as 25 points in the first meeting with Atlanta since winning last season’s first-round playoff series.
