Dougherty edged in opening round

The Dougherty boys basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in the first round of the GHSA Class 3A tournament Saturday, falling 86-85 at Long County.

Dralandius Davis led Dougherty (14-12) with 19 points, with Carlos Curry adding 17.

Also Saturday, Sherwood Christian won its quarterfinal game in the GICAA Division I-AA boys basketball tournament, defeating Community Christian 61-47 at Central Georgia Tech.

Stantravious Smith had 31 points and nine rebounds in the win, while Colin Dougherty added 16 points. Jake Medders led Community Christian with 19 points.

ASU basketball falls at Morehouse

The Albany State men’s basketball team couldn’t continue its recent hot streak Saturday, getting outscored by 12 in the second half of a 76-63 loss at Morehouse.

Albany State was outscored 41-29 in the second half after trailing by one at halftime.

Tylen Walker paced Albany State with 14 points, while Michael Green added 11. Tyrius Walker was Morehouse’s top scorer with 22 points.

Big inning sinks Albany State baseball

The West Georgia baseball team used a nine-run eighth inning to break open Saturday’s baseball game against Albany State, winning 13-3.

Albany State (3-4) managed just four hits in the loss, scoring single runs in the second, third and sixth innings. Michael Reddick took the loss.

ASU softball splits with Emmanuel

Two-run innings in the first and third and a four-run fourth helped the Albany State softball team beat Emmanuel College 8-3 on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Lavette Tucker went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for Albany State, with Aryn McGowan homering, scoring two runs and driving home four. Lauren Lowery picked up her first pitching victory of the season.

Thanks to a nine-run first inning, Emmanuel College scored a 10-5 victory in Game 2.

Jade Williams went 2-for-2 for Albany State, while McGowan and Megan Shepherd homered. McGowan was the losing pitcher.

High school baseball roundup

Lee County swept a doubleheader at Hardaway on Saturday, 11-8 and 10-3. Layne Wiard won the opener, going five innings and scattering five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Garret Suiter picked up the save and was 4-of-5 at the plate with 2 doubles. Gavin Paul was the winning pitcher in the second game, striking out seven in 4-2/3 innings. Chris Monzon went 2-for 3 with a 2-run home run and scored 2 runs, while Jonathon Logsdon was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Also Saturday, Worth County defeated Westover 6-3. Hunter Goodwin was the winning pitcher, not allowing a run on two hits in four innings while striking out 10, and Gabe Burger and Gabe Goff each had two hits. Kedarrius Cunningham took the loss for Westover, with Nick Mitchum going 2-for-2.

On Friday, Baconton Charter defeated Pelham 8-1. Will Bell struck out nine and didn’t allow an earned run in the win, with Smith Pinson striking out five and walking none in a two-inning save. Logan Cain and Stone Pinson each scored two runs on two hits. Gunnar Wisham took the loss for Pelham.
