Dougherty football hosting Perry
The Dougherty football team hosts a surging Perry squad in a non-region game at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Hugh Mills Stadium.
Led by first-year head coach Kevin Smith, Perry is 3-1 with wins over Rutland, Harris County and Veterans. The loss is to Peach County, ranked fourth in GHSA Class 3A by the Georgia Sports Writers Association.
Dougherty, which enters Region 1-3A play next week against rival Monroe, is 1-4, looking to snap a three-game losing streak. The lone win came Aug. 26 at Mitchell County.
Perry won last year’s meeting 56-28.
Worth County softball blanks Cook
The Worth County softball team needed extra innings to preserve its undefeated record, but the Rams got the job done Tuesday, beating Cook 5-0 in eight innings.
All of the scoring took place in the top of the eighth inning. An error and two singles plated Worth County’s first run, then the other four runs scored on a pair of two-out singles and a double.
Caroline Newton threw a one-hitter, striking out 15 and walking one for Worth County (19-0). Taylor Layfield, Brinsley Graddy and Kailey Parr each had two hits, with Newton driving home two runs. Julie Childers had a triple.
Also Tuesday, Lee County’s softball team improved to 7-0 in GHSA Region 1-6A play with an 8-0 win over Coffee. The Trojans (11-12 overall) scored five runs in the third inning and finished the game in five innings. Rebekah Cooper had two hits, Trellis Whaley picked up three RBI, and Abby Hughes struck out nine and walked none in a two-hitter.
In other action, Dougherty beat Westover 11-0.
History made in ASU soccer loss
The Albany State women’s soccer team remains winless, but the first-year program is no longer scoreless.
Jenna Wade netted a pass from Leticia Cupulille at the 68:21 mark Tuesday at Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, Tennessee, for the first goal and assist in Albany State women’s soccer history.
Lincoln Memorial beat Albany State 3-1, but the Rams recorded a season-high 10 shots, tying the season high for shots on goal with five.
All three of Lincoln Memorial’s goals came in the first half.
