Winfred Benson/L.C. Smith relays event held today
The annual Winfred Benson/L.C. Smith relays event is today at 9 a.m. at Hugh Mills Stadium. The event draws some of the state’s top track & field athletes.
All Star weekend continues
All Star Weekend continues today at the Cavalier Arena at Darton State College. The two-day will feature an Elementary All Star Basketball Classic, Middle School Basketball Showcase, Boys & Girls High School All Star Basketball Games and a Youth Cheer & Dance Showcase.
There will be a total of 12 events in two days. Nearly 500 kids will participate. Elite Sports & Marketing has hosted the All Star event for the past five years and the event continues to grow. Toyota of Albany will give one lucky fan the opportunity to win a 2016 Toyota Camry during halftime of the boys’ game at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Last year, more than 3,000 people attended the two-day event.
All Star Weekend will feature several players that have already signed scholarships to attend major universities. Players such as Tyree Crump (Georgia), Anfernee McLemore (Auburn), Kobi Thornton (Clemson), A’Tyanna Gaulden (Florida State) and Nausia Woolfolk (Florida State) will be participating.
Worth County baseball beats Westover
A six-run explosion in the first inning spurred the Worth County Rams to an 11-1 win in five innings over Westover on Friday.
The scored in the first on a walk by Tripp Goff, a two-run error, an RBI single by Tucker Johnson, a walk by Cody Reddell and an RBI single by Shelby Cox. Reddell finished 2 for 2.
Gabe Goff kept contact to a minimum, striking out six Westover batters. Goff allowed one earned run, three hits and four walks over five innings.
After posting two runs in the third, the Rams again scored two in the fourth. In the third, the Worth County Rams scored, scoring Reddell.
Austin Jones doubled, bringing home Goff to start the inning. That was followed up by Reddell’s single, plating Jones.
