Darton baseball beats Andrew College

Tubby Smith on Memphis’ radar

Tubby Smith is the leading candidate to become the head coach at Memphis, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.

ESPN reported that Smith would accept the position if he can reach a contract agreement with the school.

Last month, Smith led Texas Tech to the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second head coach to guide five schools into the NCAA field.

Memphis’ vacancy was created last month when coach Josh Pastner left for the Georgia Tech job.

The 64-year-old Smith led Kentucky to the national championship in 1998 and to 10 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. He also coached Minnesota into the NCAA field in 2013 before he was fired by the school.

Smith then landed at Texas Tech and has spent the past three seasons with the Red Raiders. He also has coached at Georgia and Tulsa.
