Lee County baseball falls to Russell County
A night after splitting a doubleheader with Alabama powerhouse Central High School of Phenix City, the Lee County baseball team dropped a 1-0 contest against Russell County (Ala.) Saturday at Lee County. The loss drops the Trojans to 17-4 on the season.
Lee County threw seven different pitchers against the Warriors, while Russell County starter Kobe Van Bogart hurled a four-hit shutout. Lawrence Bryant went 2 for 3 to lead the offense. Josh Hatcher, who finished with a double, and Garet Morrell had the Trojans’ other two hits.
Lee lost a 4-0 contest to Central late Friday night before rebounding to win the nightcap 7-5.
In the first game, Central scored all of its runs in the seventh inning, while Lee mustered just three hits.
But in the second game, Hatcher earned the victory in relief, while the Trojans made the most of six hits. Tyler Simon and Hatcher added doubles, while Landon Cooper finished 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the offense. Simon, Bryant, Malik Spratling and Gunnar Moss added RBIs in the game.
The Trojans return to Region 1-AAAAAA play on Tuesday night when they visit Lowndes at 6 p.m. at Noel George Field.
Baconton Charter baseball falls at Schley County
Baconton Charter held top-ranked Schley County to just two hits but nine walks and four errors helped the Wildcats down Baconton 10-2 Saturday in a nonregion game at Schley County.
The Wildcats scored five runs in the sixth to take control.
The Blazers fell to 15-4 on the season.
FSU Garnet & Gold Game ends in tie
Florida State’s Garnet & Gold spring football game played Saturday at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando ended in a 24-24 tie in front of 49,913.
It was a battle of two promising quarterbacks as Deondre Francois led the Gold team, while Malik Henry led the Garnett team.
Francois finished with 246 yards on 20 of 33 with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He tossed both of his touchdown passes to Auden Tate, who finished with six catches for 100 yards. Ryan Green led the Gold team in rushing with 84 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown.
Henry finished with 205 yards passing on 15 of 22 with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. Jared Jackson caught a 5-yard touchdown pass, while Travis Rudolph hauled in a 43-yarder from Henry.
Kicker Ricky Aguayo kicked a pair of field goals — a 45-yarder for the Garnett team and a 46-yarder for the Gold team which tied the game with 13 seconds left.
