Lee County baseball prevails in nine innings
The Lee County baseball team edged Thomas County Central 2-1 in nine innings Wednesday.
Brian Myler went 2-for-3 for Lee County, picking up the game-winning single to center.
Three Lee County pitchers combined for a three-hitter, with Logan Goff pitching the final four innings for the victory in relief of Matt Cooper and Brian Myler.
Lee County (5-0) takes part in the Lowndes Border War Tournament on Saturday, facing Florida’s Ponte Vedra and Gulf Breeze.
Worth County baseball shuts out Cairo
Hunter Goodwin and and Jeremiah Reddell combined for a shutout Wednesday as Worth County’s baseball team defeated Cairo 8-0.
Goodwin, who struck out eight in five innings of work, connected on a two-run homer in the first, and Worth County added six more runs in the sixth.
Hayes Stills took the loss for Cairo.
Lee County football celebration Monday
The Lee County football program will be honored Monday in a community celebration at Trojan Field.
The event, celebrating the Trojans’ GHSA Class 6A championship, begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes a meet-and-greet with football players and a proclamation from the Leesburg mayor.
Lee County merchandise will be on sale at the event.
GSW edges Albany State softball
Georgia Southwestern’s Lauren Kuerzi came up with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh Wednesday to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 over Albany State in the second game of a doubleheader.
Kuerzi went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI for GSW. Brittany Childs picked up the win, pitching seven innings of four-hit ball with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Lauren Lowery went the distance in the loss for Albany State, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking none.
GSW won the first game 13-0.
Clayton State clips GSW men’s basketball
Clayton State’s Nate Powell hit a pull-up jumper from just inside the lane with 3.4 seconds left to hand the Georgia Southwestern men’s basketball team a 63-61 loss Wednesday.
GSW suffered its fifth consecutive defeat to fall to 12-13 overall and 8-13 in the Peach Belt Conference. Clayton State has won 11 in a row, a streak that started with a win against the Hurricanes in Americus on Jan. 24, to improve to 20-5, 18-3 in the PBC.
Despite the loss, GSW controls its own destiny for a berth in the postseason. The Hurricanes hold the eighth and final seed for the PBC Tournament with one game remaining.
Daijon Macklien turned in one of his best performances of the season, leading the Hurricanes with 15 points behind 6-of-9 shooting. He grabbed five rebounds, dished five assists and only turned the ball over once in 36 minutes of action. Devin Watson scored 13 points and Mason added 11.
The Hurricanes’ regular-season finale is Saturday in Dahlonega against North Georgia.
