Monroe’s Leroy wins state title

Monroe’s Akelies Leroy won the Class AAAA state discus title Thursday afternoon at the Georgia High School Association boys state track & field meet at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.

Leroy, who is also a standout on the Tornadoes football team, had a throw of 165-feet, one-inch to capture the title.

Monroe track & field teammate Eric Seay came in fourth.

Leroy came just short of winning another title in the shot put. His throw went 52-9, while the winning throw traveled 53-4 1/4.

Dougherty’s Charles Porter took fifth in the triple jump at 44-2 3/4.

The meet continues through Saturday.

Baconton baseball players named all-region

Baconton Charter School shortstop Taber Raley was named the Region 1-A Player of the Year after helping the Blazers to the region title and the second round of the Georgia High School Association Class A public school playoffs.

Six other players were named to the all-region team — second-baseman Spencer Culp, designated hitter Brooks Pinson, outfielder Turner Shiver, outfielder Brantley Morgan, catcher Huntain Cain and third-baseman Christian Bostick.

Knights of Columbus golf tournament results

The 19th Annual Knights of Columbus Charity Golf Tournament was held last Saturday at the Griffin Bell Golf Course in Americus. The format was a four-player scramble and each golfers’ drive had to be used twice during the round.

The first place team with a score of 57 was Bray Bishop, Brandon Horne, Trip Parker and Jamie Ward. The second place squad of Willie Adams, Bobby Drinnon, David Murphy and Jody Pate shot 58. Rod Murray, Barry Justice, Ken Akerman and Ron Akerman shot 59 to finish third. The team of Dylan Cromer, M. DuBose, Shawn Pritchard and A.J. Zemblowski shot 60.

There were also many individual winners. Bray Bishop swung his irons as he won closest to the pin on hole number 4, hole number 6 and hole number 9. Trip Parker was closest to the pin on number 11 and Willie Adams was closest to the pin on number 17. Gloria Parmentier had the straightest drive and Bobby Usry had the longest putt.

Knights of Columbus Council 7113 of Americus raised $4,500 which will be donated to charity.
