Reese, Fabrizio claim top Region 1-6A honors
Defensive back Otis Reese and head coach Dean Fabrizio were among the top winners in GHSA Region 1-6A football awards announced Tuesday.
Reese was named the region’s Player of the Year, while Fabrizio was named Coach of the Year.
Among those from Lee County receiving first-team honors were quarterback Jase Orndorff, running back Nikko Cruz, wide receivers Ty Terrell and Josh Asbury, offensive linemen Griffin McDowell and Griffin Carder, linebacker Quin Geer and defensive backs Tay Mayo and T.J. Harris.
Coffee quarterback Wade Sumner was named Offensive Player of the Year. Coffee’s Dereck Newton and Valdosta’s Zakoby McClain shared Defensive Player of the Year honors. Coffee’s Jameon Gaskin was named Athlete of the Year, and place-kicker Cory Munson of Northside-Warner Robins was named Special Teams Player of the Year.
Hole-in-one recorded
Alex Carr aced the 13th hole at Flint River Golf Club.
Carr used a 9-wood from the white tees, playing at 156 yards. The witnesses were Charlie Watson, Frank Bunby and Luverne Kistler.
South Georgia Tech goes 1-1 in Miami
The South Georgia Tech men’s basketball team scored more than 100 points once and were only two points shy of that mark in their second matchup in the Miami Dade Classic last weekend.
The Jets opened the tournament with a 119-108 win over previously unbeaten Miami Dade but then dropped a 107-98, double-overtime decision to Palm Beach State.
Point guard Rico Simmons set a program scoring record in the win over Miami Dade with 42 points. Simmons hit 7-of-10 3-point shots and was 7-of-8 from the foul line. He also had six rebounds and seven assists.
Marquel Wiggins scored 23 points, while Dawan Bass added 16 points and Emshuan Offord scored 13 points.
Against Palm Beach State, the teams were tied at 36 at half, tied at 78 at the end of regulation and tied at 89 at the end of the first overtime. Palm Beach State then outscored South Georgia Tech 18-9 in the second overtime.
Wiggins led South Georgia Tech against Palm Beach State with 23 points and nine rebounds, with Simmons adding 21 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Mike Boone scored 17 points, and Bass put in 15 points.
Simmons was named Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Division I men’s player of the week. The Jets’ Alyssa Nieves shared women’s player of the week honors.
South Georgia Tech (4-5) hosts Tallahassee on Wednesday as part of a doubleheader. The women’s game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.
