Westover baseball defeats Americus-Sumter
Runs in the sixth and seventh innings helped Westover’s baseball team defeat Americus-Sumter 5-3 on Thursday in Americus.
Donovan Wright scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a dropped third strike, a stolen base and a pair of wild pitches. The Patriots added a run in the seventh on a Davis Spalinger triple and a Kendarrius Cunningham sacrifice fly.
Spalinger went six innings for the win, allowing three hits while striking out nine and walking none. Nick Mitchum picked up the save.
Braelin Williams, who went 2-for-3 offensively, took the loss.
Deerfield-Windsor baseball tops Southland
Two-run innings in the first, fourth and seventh innings led to a 6-1 Deerfield-Windsor baseball victory Thursday at Southland.
Jack Kimbrel went 2-for-4 with a double for Deerfield-Windsor. Pitchers Baylin Moore and Joe Morgan combined to strike out 12.
Baconton Charter sweeps twin bill
Baconton Charter’s baseball team rolled to 15-1 and 20-2 victories Thursday over Randolph-Clay.
In the opener, Baconton Charter scored 10 runs in the first inning and five in the second, all on three hits. Gregory Manning went 2-for-2, both doubles, with two runs scored and two RBI, while Taylor Hall added three RBI. Stone Pinson, Brady Ragan and Jacob Smith each pitched one inning for the Blazers.
In Game 2, the Blazers scored 12 runs in the first inning and eight in the second, doing so on six hits. Haden High went 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Also for Baconton Charter, Will Bush had a triple, while Jackson Boslick and Taylor Hall had doubles. Bo Schwarm was the winning pitcher.
Jets’ Adenike named to all-tournament team
South Georgia Tech sophomore forward Esther Adenike was selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association women’s Division I All-Tournament team.
Twelve players are named to the team. Adenike is the first South Georgia Tech women’s player to make a national all-tournament team.
Earlier, Adenike was named a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Two-Year All-American and the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year.
Adenike averaged 13.6 points per game, finishing third in NJCAA Division I in rebounding with 318.
South Georgia Tech finished with a 29-6 record, reaching the second round of the national tournament.
