Westwood girls pick up second win

The Westwood girls basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 57-41 win over Glenwood (Alabama) in the Terrell Academy Tip-Off Classic.

Gracie Pollock paced Westwood with 18 points and eight rebounds. Karlie Jones had 16 points and five rebounds, and McKenlee Coleman added 11 points and two blocks. Briana Thompson had six points and six steals.

In the same event, Deerfield-Windsor defeated Crisp Academy 40-36. Lila Lanier and Destiny Reed each scored nine for the Knights, while Claire McGarr led Crisp Academy with 18 points.

GSW men defeat Fort Valley State

Four players scored in double figures Tuesday as Georgia Southwestern defeated Fort Valley State University 65-52 on Tuesday in Americus.

The Hurricanes improved their record to 2-0, while Fort Valley State fell to 2-3.

Hasaan Buggs made 5-of-10 shots, finished with 11 points and led the team in rebounds (seven) and assists (four). Andre Statam added 12 points and six rebounds. R.J. Sessions scored 12 points and Devin Watson chipped in 11.

A 10-0 GSW run, ignited by a Statam 3-pointer, allowed the Hurricanes to pull away early in the second half.

GSW hosts USC Aiken at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the Peach Belt opener for both teams.

Georgia Southern reaches tourney final

Mike Hughes tallied 17 points and five rebounds, and Georgia Southern held UMKC to one field goal in the final four minutes to earn a 78-75 men’s basketball victory over the Kangaroos in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Showcase on Tuesday in Estero, Florida.

The Eagles advanced to the championship game, which took place Wednesday night against Towson.

With the Eagles leading 76-75, Hughes was fouled with 3.3 seconds on the clock and calmly sank two free throws to make it a 3-point lead. Xavier Bishop tried a 30-footer for the tie, but Tookie Brown slapped the ball away as he rose up and time expired.

Brown finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Eagles (5-0), and Ike Smith collected 12 points and eight rebounds. Montae Glenn had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Jake Allsmiller scored eight.
