Spring tournaments kick into high gear

GHSA baseball, soccer tournaments begin this week

Several spring sports conduct postseason competition at the same time on the high school level, making this time of year a busy one.

Here’s what is happening this week:

Baseball

The GHSA begins state tournament action this week, with best-of-three first round series taking place Thursday and Friday.

Lee County, the Region 1-6A champion begins its quest to return to the Class 6A championship series with a first-round home matchup with Richmond Hill. They meet in a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Worth County, which secured the No. 2 spot out of Region 1-3A in dramatic fashion last week against Crisp County, hosts Brantley County. Monroe is the No. 4 seed out of the same region and travels to Region 2-3A champion Appling County.

Class 1A-Public brackets will be published once power ratings are finalized. Baconton Charter earned a first-round bye as the Region 1-1A champion. Pelham is ranked 16th and on the bubble for a first-round home series.

Regular-season play wraps up this week in the GISA. First-round state tournament action takes place May 4-5.

Golf

GISA championship tournaments take place today. The Georgia Veterans Memorial Golf Course at Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club hosts Class 2A competition, where Terrell Academy will look to repeat its 2017 championship win. The Class 3A tournament takes place at Sapelo Hammock Golf Club in Shellman Bluff.

GHSA teams have until May 8 to complete area competition. State tournaments take place May 21-22.

The GICAA tournament is scheduled for May 7 at Harbor Club on Lake Oconee.

Boys soccer

Dougherty claimed the GHSA Region 1-3A title and will host Appling County on Wednesday at Hugh Mills Stadium. Worth County, the No. 3 seed from Region 1-3A, travels to Pierce County, with that contest tentatively set for Friday.

GISA regular-season play concludes this week. First-round state tournament competition will take place May 4-5.

GICAA tournament action is scheduled to begin this week.

Girls soccer

GHSA Region 1-6A champion Lee County hosts a first-round contest Tuesday. Worth County, the No. 2 seed out of Region 1-3A, is tentatively scheduled to host Liberty County on Thursday. Dougherty, the No. 4 team out of Region 1-3A, is tentatively scheduled to travel to Pierce County on Thursday.

GISA regular-season play concludes this week. First-round state tournament competition will take place May 4-5.

GICAA tournament action is scheduled to begin this week.

Boys tennis

GISA individual tournament action took place last week at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in Macon. Westwood’s Cameron Godwin won Class 2A singles competition, while teammate Cole Pollock was a semifinalist. Deerfield-Windsor’s Charles Peeler and Frank Middleton were semifinalists in Class 3A doubles, while Albert Stringer and Brent Johnson were semifinalists in Class 2A doubles.

The GISA team tournament takes place Tuesday, also at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center. Westwood earned a spot in the eight-team Class 2A bracket as the Region 3-2A champion.

Baconton Charter, the No. 2 seed from GHSA Area 1A-Public, opens Class 1A-Public competition this week against Claxton.

Girls tennis

GISA individual tournament action took place last week at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in Macon. Deerfield-Windsor’s Lilia Sullivan and Sarah Perrine finished second in Class 3A doubles, while Westwood’s McKenlee Coleman finished as runner-up in Class 2A singles.

The GISA team tournament takes place Tuesday, also at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center. Deerfield-Windsor (Class 3A) and Westwood (Class 2A) enter their respective eight-team brackets as region champions.

All area GHSA teams have concluded their seasons. No area team advanced past the first round of the GHSA tournament.

Track and field

Sherwood Christian tied John Hancock for the GICAA Division I girls title in a meet that took place Friday and Saturday at Lamar County. Sherwood’s Joy Kendrick won the Division I girls 3,200-meter run, Ke’Mia Starling won the girls shot put, and Sherwood’s 4×400 relay team also claimed first place.

The GISA state meet takes place Thursday-Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium. Deerfield-Windsor is the defending champion in both Class 3A boys and girls competition.

GHSA sectional competition is scheduled for Saturday. Grovetown (Class 6A), Kinnett Stadium in Columbus (Class 4A), Bremen (Class 3A) and Tift County (Class 1A-Public) will host area teams. The top four finishers in each event advance to state competition.
