Terrell Academy beats Fullington, 12-2
The Eagles started slowly but won big.
DAWSON — A big sixth inning lifted the Terrell Academy Eagles to a 12-2 win over Fullington Academy on Monday, giving the Eagles their third victory in four games as they near the start of the GIAA playoffs.
The Eagles have just one regular-season game remaining before postseason play begins next week.
“Any win at this point in the year going into the playoffs is a good win,” Terrell Academy head coach Ashley Walker said. “We started off slow offensively and had some big mistakes that cost us runs early. However, we settled in, got some hits with men on, and were able to put pressure on them defensively—and it worked in our favor.”
Terrell Academy’s offense was sluggish early against Fullington left-hander Bryson Faulk, managing only a 3-2 lead through four innings. That changed in the fifth when the Eagles erupted for six runs.
John Mark Irvin, Landon Misamore, Brody Cowart, and Jace Berry all singled during the rally, which was aided by two errors and two hit batsmen, allowing the Eagles to pull away.
Terrell Academy ended the game in the sixth, scoring three more runs. Fullington loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter, and Kyle Hall was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Irvin then delivered a two-run single to center to trigger the 10-run mercy rule.
The Eagles pounded out 13 hits in the win and took advantage of six walks, four hit batsmen, and four Fullington errors. Harrison Dozier’s lead-off double in the third was Terrell Academy’s only extra-base hit, though Tucker Leanza reached third base on a dropped third strike and a throwing error.
Irvin also earned the win on the mound. The senior right-hander worked 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, four walks, and striking out seven.
“Today our pitching and defense were solid,” Walker said. “We have to clean up some walks, but all in all, it was a good win moving forward.”
Terrell Academy will close out the regular season on Thursday, hosting Westwood at 4 p.m. in Dawson.
