ALBANY — The long recruiting process of one of the nation’s top athletes came to a conclusion Monday afternoon.
Terrell County athlete Tray Bishop released a video on the recruiting website 247sports announcing his commitment to Auburn University.
Bishop, who is rated a four-star by numerous recruiting sites, had his choices to Auburn, Georgia and Florida months ago.
The recruiting process was unique for Bishop because he saw himself playing a different position at each school in his top three.
Bishop saw himself as a quarterback at Auburn, wide receiver at Georgia and defensive back at Florida.
He visited Auburn on Saturday with his family and decided the Tigers were the right fit.
“Having my family on the Auburn campus was huge,” Bishop said. “They liked talking with the coaches and they really liked the campus.”
Despite being listed as an athlete, Bishop will likely get a shot at quarterback in Gus Malzahn’s system.
“During my high school career, we have done some plays that are from the Auburn offense,” Bishop said. “I feel like it will be the same kind of plays but probably a bit tougher.”
Bishop had long intended to commit on Monday, but last Thursday, Bishop tweeted, “Due to the fact that other schools have come into the picture, I will be putting a hold on my commitment date!!!! I have to re-evaluate.”
Despite the tweet, Bishop stuck with his original plan.
“I wanted to go ahead and get it out of the way,” he said. “I felt comfortable with the decision.”
When Bishop informed Malzahn of his decision, the coach got in a jab about how long it took for the athlete to pick Auburn.
“He told me ‘It’s about time you pulled the trigger,’ ” Bishop said.
