PELHAM — The Terrell County Greenwave recovered from a difficult first quarter Friday night and took a 24-15 win over the Pelham Hornets in Region 1-A action.

It was Pelham’s first loss of the season. The Hornets fell to 2-1 and 1-1 in Region 1-A play. Meanwhile, Terrell County (1-2, 1-1) earned its first victory of the year.

Pelham dominated the first quarter as the Greenwave gave away two turnovers and suffered several penalties. But the second quarter was a different story.

The potent rushing attack of the Greenwave started rolling. Behind outside running of sophomore Shaundarious Kimbrough and through the middle by senior fullback Joseph Minter, the Greenwave changed the momentum and scored 18 unanswered points in the second quarter to take an 18-13 lead into halftime.

Kimbrough scored first for the Terrell with a 16-yard scamper, then Minter followed with two touchdowns — a 37-yard run and a 30-yard run — through the middle of the Hornet defense.

The Hornets opened the game playing strong defense to throttle the Greenwave offense and moved the ball down the field behind the running of Judah Wilson, Javoris Williams and Kobe Russell. The Hornets scored first on a seven-yard touchdown run by Williams after screen pass from freshman quarterback Kendrick Patterson to Russell.

Russell picked off a pass from quarterback Tray Bishop of Terrell County late in the first half to set up the next Hornet score. A few minutes later on the first play of the second quarter, Patterson hit Russell for a 29-yard screen pass that put the Hornets up 13-0.

The only scoring in the third quarter was a safety by a rejuvenated Hornets’ defense when Bishop was tackled in the end zone by a host of Hornets. The Greenwave and the Hornets exchanged a number of turnovers from each team in the fourth quarter, but the critical one was a fumble Terrell County recovered at the three-yard line. Bishop scored to seal the victory.
