Top 25 roundup: Stanley helps Iowa rout No. 6 Ohio State

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Nate Stanley threw five touchdown passes, Josh Jackson had three interceptions and Iowa slammed down No. 6 Ohio State in a stunning 55-24 victory on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

A week after the Buckeyes (7-2, 5-1 Big Ten) rallied for an epic 39-38 victory over Penn State, they were thoroughly dominated by the Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-3).

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, who had played his way into Heisman Trophy contention with a near-perfect game last week, threw four interceptions and the Buckeyes struggled on offense most of the day. Barrett was 18-of-34 passing for 208 yards with three touchdown passes.

The 55 points by Iowa were the most ever allowed by an Urban Meyer-coached team.

No. 1 Georgia 24, South Carolina 10

ATHENS, Ga. — Freshman Jake Fromm completed 16 of 22 passes for 196 yards and the Bulldogs rushed for 242 to topple the Gamecocks at Sanford Stadium.

Nick Chubb ran for 102 and Sony Michel added 81 for Georgia (9-0, 6-0 SEC).

Quarterback Jake Bentley accounted for most of the offense for the Gamecocks (6-3, 4-3), completing 21 of 35 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown.

No. 3 Notre Dame 48, Wake Forest 37

Quarterback Brandon Wimbush accounted for three touchdowns and overcame a scary hit to the knee to lead the Fighting Irish to their seventh straight win, over the Demon Deacons in South Bend, Ind.

Wimbush rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns, but made Notre Dame fans worry after he stayed down on the turf after taking a hard hit to his right knee on a run right before halftime. The junior returned for the second half, though, and threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Chase Claypool to help put away the Demon Deacons.

Claypool had nine catches for 180 yards for the Irish (8-1), who shredded Wake Forest (5-4) for 710 total yards.

No. 4 Clemson 38, No. 20 North Carolina State 31

RALEIGH, N.C. — Quarterback Kelly Bryant ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as the Tigers withstood the Wolfpack at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Clemson now controls its destiny in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Atlantic Division after handing the Wolfpack (6-3, 4-1 ACC) their first league loss. The Tigers (8-1, 6-1) can clinch a return to the ACC Championship Game by defeating Florida State next week, or if N.C. State loses any of its three remaining conference games.

Bryant was 20-for-38 for 191 yards through the air and he also gained 88 yards on 20 carries.

No. 5 Oklahoma 62, No. 11 Oklahoma State 52

STILLWATER, Okla. — Baker Mayfield set a school record with 598 passing yards and threw for five touchdowns, leading the Sooners past the Cowboys in a shootout that featured a combined 1,446 yards of offense.

Two Mason Rudolph mistakes — a lost fumble in the third quarter and an interception on the next possession — spoiled his own big day and allowed Oklahoma (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) to surge ahead … for good.

Rudolph passed for 448 yards and five touchdowns, both school records in a Bedlam game, while Justice Hill set another Cowboys (7-2, 4-2) record in the rivalry with 228 rushing yards, scoring twice.

No. 24 Michigan State 27, No. 7 Penn State 24

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Matt Coglin kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Spartans a win over the Nittany Lions in a game that feartured a 3-hour, 22-minute weather delay.

The long-winded victory became even more important with Ohio State’s loss at Iowa. The Spartans (7-2, 5-1) pulled into a first-place tie in the Big Ten East Division with the Buckeyes heading into their showdown in Columbus next Saturday.

Michigan State once again relied on its suddenly potent passing attack. Spartans quarterback Brian Lewerke completed 33 of 56 passes for 400 yards and two touchdowns against Penn State (7-2, 4-2).

Lewerke, who set a school-record with 445 passing yards in a triple-overtime loss to Northwestern the previous week, became the first quarterback in school history to have back-to-back 400-yard games.

No. 9 Wisconsin 45, Indiana 17

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Junior fullback Alex Ingold touched the football five times and delivered three touchdowns as the Badgers rolled past the Hoosiers.

Subbing for an injured Austin Ramesh, Ingold recorded a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs and caught an 18-yard TD pass.

Wisconsin improved to 9-0 overall, 6-0 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are 3-6, 0-6.

No. 14 Auburn 42, Texas A&M 27

Sophomore quarterback Jarrett Stidham passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns to help the Tigers past the Aggies in SEC play at College Station, Texas.

Junior running back Kerryon Johnson rushed for 145 yards and one touchdown and also corralled a receiving score for Auburn (7-2, 5-1 SEC). Sophomore receiver Darius Slayton’s long touchdown catch and a blocked punt late in the first half changed momentum as the Tigers won for the sixth time in the past seven games.

Junior receiver Christian Kirk had eight receptions for 62 yards for the Aggies (5-4, 3-3) to raise his career total to 205 catches, becoming just the third player in school history to reach 200. Sophomore running back Trayveon Williams rushed for 103 yards but couldn’t prevent the Aggies from losing for the third time in four games.

West Virginia 20, No. 15 Iowa State 16

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Cyclones nearly dug out of a 20-point hole but the Mountaineers’ defense made several late stops in a win.

Though the Mountaineers (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) were two-point favorites entering the game, it had an upset feel given the Cyclones’ terrific October. Iowa State (6-3, 4-2) received 115 rushing yards from David Montgomery and scored the final 16 points, but couldn’t finish the comeback while twice settling for field goals inside the West Virginia 10-yard line.

Will Grier completed 20 of 25 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns for the Mountaineers. Justin Crawford ran for 102 yards on 25 carries, and Ka’Raun White caught four passes for 167 yards.

No. 16 Mississippi State 34, Massachusetts 23

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Deddrick Thomas’ 83-yard punt return late in the fourth quarter helped the Bulldogs stave off the Minutemen at Davis Wade Stadium.

It was the first time this season that Mississippi State has been in a game decided by less than 21 points. The Bulldogs (7-2) have won four consecutive games while UMass fell to 2-7.

Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald carried the Bulldogs with his legs, as he has the past two seasons, rushing for 135 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries. MSU also got a strong workload from running back Aeris Williams, who had 24 carries for 114 yards.

No. 25 Washington State 24, No. 21 Stanford 21

Luke Falk went from being benched one week to becoming the Pac-12’s career passing leader the next while leading the No. 25 Cougars to an important victory over the Cardinal.

Falk, who completed 34 of 48 pass attempts for 337 yards and three touchdowns, became the Pac-12’s career passing yardage leader with 13,806 yards. He broke the record of 13,600 yards held by former Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion.

Washington State, which finished 7-0 at home for the first time in program history, improved to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the Pac-12 North, while Stanford fell to 6-3 and 5-2.
