Demetris Robertson, a wide receiver who transferred from Cal to Georgia this spring, will be eligible to play immediately in the 2018 season, Georgia confirmed Friday.

Robertson was a five-star prospect from Savannah, Ga., in the Class of 2016. He was ranked as the No. 1 receiver in the nation that year, according to the 247Sports composite. He announced in June that he was leaving Cal, citing unspecified “personal reasons.”

The NCAA granted him a waiver, meaning he won’t have to sit out a season as typically is required by NCAA transfer rules.

At Cal, he sustained a leg injury that ended his season after just two games. In 2016, as a freshman, he caught 50 passes for 767 yards.

Robertson will replace some of the offense the preseason No. 4-ranked Bulldogs lost with the graduation of star running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.

Georgia senior receiver Terry Godwin said at SEC Media Days in July that he is looking forward to playing with Robertson.

“He’s a terrific athlete,” Godwin said. “Just to add another weapon to that room, it’s more smiles for us because we know we’ve always got someone in that room that can make a play for us, no matter who it is.”

The Bulldogs open the season Sept. 1 against Austin Peay.
