ALBANY – Dougherty High School boys basketball coach Ty Randolph has resigned, the Albany Herald learned Thursday morning.

After two years as the head coach of the Trojans, Randolph felt like it was time to explore other options.

“Basketball is not my purpose, it is my platform,” Randolph said. “I was able to use the coaching tool to help kids and I got to use it to help kids become better men. I have served my purpose here at Dougherty. Now, it is time to explore the next step in my life.”

His resignation comes a little more than a week after the Trojans’ season was ended by Monroe in the second round of the Region 1-AAAA tournament. Dougherty finished the year 5-22 after having to forfeit 16 games because of an ineligible player. The Trojans were 8-8 at the time of the ruling.

Randolph said that the resignation was not due to the postseason ban the school received from the GHSA and was something that he had been thinking about before the ban.

“We’ve accomplished a lot of our goals on the court,” Randolph said. I think this team will be very competitive for years to come.”

Randolph provided stability to a Dougherty program that was reeling after former coach and athletic director Donald Poole resigned abruptly during the middle of the 2013-14 season. Ty Hayes finished the season as the interim coach before Randolph took over during the summer of 2014.

Randolph previously coached at Groves High School in Garden City near Savannah before leaving to assist NBA standout Kwame Brown. He was also a former Harlem Globetrotter. During his tenure at Groves, he led the Rebels to a 37-19 record and two state tournament appearances. He worked in NBA player development for five years before coming to Dougherty.

“We want to thank Coach Ty Randolph for his two years at Dougherty High School,” Dougherty High School Athletic Director Harley Calhoun said. “We would also like to wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

There is no timetable on when the vacancy would be filled.
