LEESBURG — Lee County lefty Gaven Smith started with fire Tuesday, striking out five of the first nine batters he faced, but two errors in the fifth inning and a total of five on the day helped the Veterans War Hawks beat the Trojans 7-1 at Lee County High School. The Trojans are now 9-7 on the year and 3-4 in the region.
With Smith dealing early, the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Grayson Spears and Josh Barnes started the game at the plate for the Trojans with back-to-back singles against Veterans’ Noah Fries. After a sacrifice bunt from Jackson Creech moved both runners up a base, Durrah Butler hit a long sacrifice fly to right field to score Spears.
That was the only time the Trojans crossed the plate.
The War Hawks pushed three runs across in the fifth with two hits and two errors, then added four more in the top of the seventh with just one single. The War Hawks used an error, three walks, a player hit by a pitch, a sacrifice fly and that one single to score four runs and put the game away.
Smith took the loss on the mound for the Trojans. He pitched six innings and gave up five hits and three runs — none of which were earned. He didn’t walk any batters and struck out eight. Carter Singletary and Ethan Powell pitched the seventh inning.
The Trojans managed just four hits against Fries. Spears had two of those hits for Lee County.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Veterans in Kathleen on Friday afternoon. The next time the Trojans play at home will be Tuesday when Thomas County Central comes to Leesburg.
