If outsiders aren’t supposed to mess with Texas, the same apparently holds true for Texas mascots.
Two famed mascots among college football powerhouses — Bevo XV of Texas and Uga X of Georgia — took their rivalry to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Tuesday night in a pregame meeting that was just as intense as any stare-down between heavyweight boxers at the center of the ring.
As handlers for Bevo, the 1,600-pound steer, and Uga the bulldog were positioning the mascots for a photo op before the Longhorns-Bulldogs game in the Superdome, Bevo went charging in the direction of his much smaller counterpart, knocking down metal barriers along the way.
Texas senior Patrick Dowell, one of Bevo’s handlers, said, according to ESPN.com, “We were trying to turn him around to take a picture, and he made a run for it. He was just going to say hi.”
Bevo’s handlers quickly restored order, and no harm was done to Uga or spectators in the vicinity of the incident. The photo op finally happened without any further drama as Bevo, in his third year of service on the Longhorns’ sideline, faced the stands, which was his intended position.
Earlier in the 2018 season, Bevo was involved in another incident with another school. He was banned from the game at Kansas because the Jayhawks have a rule prohibiting live mascots. Bevo missed the action for just the second time in 73 years, according to the school. The original Bevo became part of Texas football as far back as 1916.
John Baker, the owner of Sunrise Ranch where Bevo XV was bred, said to ESPN.com of his steer who will turn 4 years old later in January: “He’s as docile as a lamb. That’s the first time he’s done that this year.
“He’s a healthy and happy Bevo,” Baker said.
Knowing how bitter rivalries go, though, who isn’t rooting for a rematch?
