Westover adds girls’ flag football

ALBANY — Another exciting chapter is being written for girls athletics at Westover Comprehensive High School.

Beginning with the 2025 season, Westover will officially field a girls flag football team, becoming the latest high school in southwest Georgia to add one of the fastest-growing sports in the state. The program’s launch comes on the heels of a $10,000 grant awarded to the school by the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, recommended by Atlanta Sports Entertainment.

The funding ensures full participation in the upcoming season, including uniforms, equipment, and travel needs.

Westover will join a competitive regional schedule that includes Early County, Sumter County, Baker County, Turner County, Mitchell County, Worth County, and Dougherty County’s two high schools—Monroe and Dougherty.

“We are thrilled to expand opportunities for our female athletes,” said Westover principal William Chunn. “After launching girls’ volleyball last year in Dougherty County, flag football is another step forward in providing more options, more equity, and more excitement on the field.”

Waquanza Solomon will serve as Westover’s first head coach for the girls’ flag football program. Solomon, a longtime supporter of youth sports and student development, is expected to bring strong leadership and enthusiasm to the new team.

Girls’ flag football has seen explosive growth in Georgia since it was sanctioned as a varsity sport by the GHSA. Backed by the Atlanta Falcons and the Blank Foundation, dozens of schools across the state have embraced the sport in recent years, creating new athletic opportunities for young women and a fast-paced, competitive fall season.
