TYRONE, Ga. — The Westover High School boys basketball team had its season come to an end Thursday night in the second round of the Georgia High School Association Class AAAA state tournament.

The Patriots lost 84-73 at Sandy Creek.

Quindavious Smith led the Patriots with 26 points, while Kris Gardner finished with 20. Jamarea Grier scored 15.

“We dug ourselves in a big hole in the first half,” Westover boys coach Dallis Smith said. “They fought hard and cut it to four, but I think it could have been a different game had we played better in the first half.”

The Patriots trailed by as many as 16 in the first half.

It was a strong finish for a young Westover team who wasn’t expected to compete for a state tournament berth. But the Patriots, who finished as the No. 3 seed in Region 1-AAAA, won their first-round postseason game last week.

“It was a great year,” Smith said. “Nobody really expected us to be where we were. The kids came in and we had some ups and downs, but they bought in and came together. With some of the younger kids returning, we’re looking forward to this summer with them.”
