Westover boys, Monroe girls take top spots at Westover Relays

ALBANY — Eleven area schools brought teams to Albany for the Westover Relays this week, but it was two local schools that took the top spots. Monroe’s defending state champion girls’ team took the top spot, edging out cross-town rivals Westover and Lee County. The Westover boys took the top spot over Dougherty, which finished second Columbus came in third and Lee County in fourth.

In speed events for the girls, Lee County’s Jordyn Perkins took first in the 100 meter dash, while Monroe’s Mikendy Edwards won the 200-meter dash. Perkins finished third in the 200. In the 400, Monroe’s Camielle Milledge nosed out Westover’s Shamia Jones for the win by .3 seconds. Jones then won the 800-meter for the Patriots, beating Monroe’s Jakeyla Shealy, who finished second, and Endeah Martin in third.

In the long distance races, Bainbridge runner Vivian Schuyler won both the 1600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run. Lee County runners Emily Phillips and Caroline Taylor finished third and fourth, respectively, in both races.

Westover senior Chastity Pickett won both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles. Bainbrige’s Tykeia Campbell finished second in the 100 meter hurdles, and Monroe’s Berniya Albritton crossed the line in third. Monroe’s Camielle Milledge finished second in the 300-meter hurdles, and Rachel Kiesau of Lee County was third.

The 4×100 relay team from Carver of Columbus took first place in that race, with Monroe in second, Lee County in third and Dougherty in fourth. Westover won the 4×400 relay with Monroe in second, Dougherty in third and Lee County in fourth.

In field events, Monroe’s Camielle Milledge won the high jump, Deerfield-Windsor’s Deanna Wilcox won the pole vault and Westover’s Chelsea Bass and Janya Singleton finished second and third, respectively. Carver’s Sadrea Mabry won the long jump over Monroe’s Mikendy Edwards in second and Westover’s Chastity Pickett, who finished third. Lee County’s Javen Wimberly won the triple jump over Janaya Singleton of Westover and Tieria Malone of Monroe. Carver’s Shania Riles won the shot put as Monroe’s Jahanna Jones and Lacorria Green finished second and third. Riles also took first in the discus, with Jones again right behind her in second.

BOYS

Americus-Sumter’s Keyvonte Nelson was the fastest man on the track in the 100-meter, edging Dougherty’s Keandres Johnson and Hassein Reid, who finished second and third, respectively. Nelson and teammate Trevian Thomas took the 200-meter 1-2 for the Bobcats, while Dougherty’s Reid finished third. Kason Jones of Monroe won the 400-meter race, edging Dougherty’s Antonio Knighton by two-tenths of a second. Westover’s Roderic Wells took the 800-meter race and Knighton finished second again. Knighton’s teammate from Dougherty Daniel Stewart, Jr. claimed third place. Stewart then won the 1,600-meter race beating Westover’s Henry Plowden in second and Lee County’s Gavin Livingston in third. Livingston then won the 3200 meter and Plowden took second in that race as well.

In the 110-meter hurdles Westover teammates Myles McCoy and Austin Cloud took first and second, followed by Dougherty’s Rashawn Douglas. McCoy also won the 300 meter hurdles, beating Braylon Berryhill of Lee County in second and Dougherty’s Cameron Moore in third.

Americus-Sumter swept both of the relay events with Dougherty finishing second in both of those races.

In field events, Westover’s Michael Isler and Bobby Terrell finished 1-2 in the high jump, ahead of Monroe freshman Domonik Henderson. Mason Compton of Tiftarea Academy took the top spot in the pole vault ahead of Dougherty’s Rodney Walker.

Daveon Sanders of Lee County won the long jump and Abijah Wilcox of Westover won the triple jump. Deerfield Windsor’s John Collier Logan won the shot put with Jamie Pettway of Westover in second. Pettway won the discus with Dougherty’s Caleb Vance close behind. Logan finished fourth in the discus for the Knights.
