Defensive lineman now a free agent after leaving college early
From Staff, Wire Reports
There was no draft call this weekend for Trenton Thompson.
The Westover graduate who left Georgia a year early went undrafted in the NFL draft that concluded Saturday in Arlington, Texas. The 6-foot-3, 288-pound defensive tackle is left to join an NFL team as an undrafted free agent or pursue a spot in another league, such as the Canadian Football League or the Alliance of American Football, which begins play in February.
Thompson battled injuries during his collegiate career. His tackle numbers took a dip in 2017, falling to 38 total tackles from 56 in 2016. Still, he was projected by NFL.com to go in the fourth or fifth rounds.
Thompson’s teammate on the defensive line, John Atkins, also went undrafted, as did outside linebacker Davin Bellamy. According to NFL.com, 37 of the 106 underclassmen who entered the draft this year went undrafted.
Georgia wound up with six selections in this year’s draft. Javon Wims was taken with the 224th pick Saturday, the sixth selection of the seventh round, where he will join Bulldogs teammate and No. 8 overall pick Roquan Smith.
Three UGA players went in Thursday’s first round. In addition to Smith, offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn (23rd pick) and running back Sony Michel (31st pick) went to the New England Patriots.
Friday, running back Nick Chubb went early in the second round, going with the 35th overall selection to Cleveland. Outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter with the 66th overall pick, the second pick of the third round, to the New York Giants.
The Atlanta Falcons opened the draft Thursday by picking up another Alabama wide receiver to supplement Julio Jones.
Friday, the Falcons picked up Colorado cornerback Isaiah Oliver in the second round and South Florida defensive tackle Deandrin Senat in the third round. The Falcons’ Saturday picks included Southern Miss running back Ito Smith in the fourth round and a pair of sixth-round selections: LSU wide receiver Russell Gage and Yale linebacker Foye Oluokun.
This year’s Mr. Irrelevant award, which goes to the final pick, went to SMU wide receiver Trey Quinn.
The Washington Redskins made Quinn the 256th pick of the draft after receiving the selection in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, who originally acquired it from the Atlanta Falcons.
Quinn, who measured 6 feet and 203 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine, made 114 receptions for 1,236 yards and 13 touchdowns in his only season with the Mustangs.
The 22-year-old wideout was a record-setting receiver at Barbe High in Louisiana, where he also excelled in baseball and as a track sprinter. He signed with LSU and played portions of two seasons before transferring out and redshirting in 2016.
Quinn, who threw a no-hitter in the opening round of the 2008 Little League World Series, is the grandson of Bob Keasler, who was the head football coach at McNeese State and Louisiana-Monroe.
