Westover girls win fourth straight region title, boys finish second

ALBANY — Westover senior Madison Mitchell won three individual events to help the Lady Patriots win their fourth consecutive region championship last week at the Region 1-4A track meet at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The Westover boys finished second behind Bainbridge in the team title chase.

Mitchell won the girls’ 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and also won the girls’ long jump to help the Lady Patriots take the top spot.

Westover freshman Sydney Donaldson finished fourth in the long jump but won the girls’ high jump and the girl’s triple jump to put up more points for the Lady Patriots.

Jada Landers finished fourth in the 800-meter run, then won the 1600-meter run with teammate Tania Lamar in fourth place. Lamar then won the 3200-meter run for Westover with teammate Yaliza Wright in second place. Natanya Taylor finished second in the 100-meter hurdles. Aamya Daniels took second in the girls’ pole vault for Westover.

In the relays, Westover’s girls won the 800-meter and the 3200-meter relays and finished second in the 400-meter relay.

Westover’s Jaylan Mclloyd led the boys team with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash, a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash and a second-place finish in the boy’s long jump. Ryan Jenkins also won the top spot in the region in the discus throw, and the 800-meter relay team also finished first. Zyler Thomas and Zavion Tillman finished second and third, respectively, in the triple jump.

Westover’s Lady Patriots amassed 201 team points to beat Shaw High School for the top spot. Shaw finished with 155 points. Bainbridge finished third, Cairo took fourth and Hardaway finished fifth for the girls.

Bainbridge won the boys’ team title with 204 points, while Westover finished with 152 points. Cairo took third, Shaw was fourth and Hardaway finished fifth.
