ALBANY — The Westover Patriots (19-7) will host the first round of the state Class AAAA playoff game Wednesday at Westover against Spalding (16-11), according to head basketball coach Dallis Smith. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. Westover’s Lady Patriots will open the playoffs Tuesday night at home in Albany against Howard of Macon (12-15) at 6 p.m.

The Patriots won the region championship Friday night at Hardaway while the Lady Patriots lost in the finals.

Spalding of Griffin fell to fourth place in Region 2 after losing to Westside 82-57. Howard beat West Laurens 46-32 to claim third in Region 2.

The No. 4-ranked Bainbridge Bearcats (25-2) had beaten Westover (19-7) twice this season and had won 22 straight games but Westover beat the Bearcats 54-39 Friday night in Columbus to win the Region 1 4-A boys basketball championship.

The Patriots led 25-18 at the half and stretched that lead to 20 points in the fourth quarter before the Bearcats hit two threes to close the gap slightly.

Senior point guard Kavon Johnson scored 22 points to lead the Patriots and Travion Wheeler added 12.

Westover’s Lady Patriots fell to host Hardaway 70-42.
