Westover’s Jamie Pettway named Region 1-4A Defensive Player of the Year

ALBANY — Westover High School linebacker Jamie Pettway was named the Region 1-4A Defensive Player of the Year after a stellar season leading the Patriots.

Pettway, who signed with Missouri on Dec. 19 during the NCAA’s early football signing period, was one of a handful of Albany-area players who made the Region 1-4A team that was announced recently.

Westover quarterback Cameron Hopkins, wide receiver Anthony Jackson, offensive lineman Jaquan Carter and defensive lineman Adam Martin were named to the first team.

Dougherty placed two on the all-region first team — offensive lineman Josh Hall and linebacker Gamarcus Freeman.

Several players from both schools were named to the second team including Westover wide receiver Jordyn Williams, Dougherty offensive lineman Isaiah Donaldson, Westover offensive lineman Malik Stubbs, Westover kicker Collins Giovingo, Westover linebacker Ryan Flournoy, Westover defensive backs Eugene Byrd and Isaiah Berry, Dougherty defensive back Jacorey Jones and Dougherty athlete Sergio White.

Five Dougherty players — defensive lineman Caleb Vance, linebacker Kenorrie Brown and wide receivers Lamar Hall, Quaddarion Shedrick and Rod Jones — were named honorable mention.

Meanwhile, four Westover players were named honorable mention — running backs Johnathan Mock and Johnuell Hicks and defensive linemen Will Jones and Jonathan Glover.

Wide receiver Lamario Larry, offensive lineman Eric Aldridge, athlete Montrellis Wilson and defensive backs Trevian Thomas and Jakobe McCullers from Americus-Sumter were named to the first team.

Americus-Sumter also had several players on the second team — quarterback Kierston Harvey, wide receiver Que Willoughby and linebacker Chase Jones.

Offensive lineman Cameron Dunnings, defensive lineman Shaquille Colbert, wide receiver Sam Crumbley, defensive lineman JaWarren Lewis, linebackers Bradley Perry, Frank Lewis, Mike Flemmings and AJ Stokes, defensive lineman Spencer McDowell and DeMarquil Myers were named honorable mention from Americus-Sumter.

Cairo coach Steve Devoursney and Columbus High coach Phil Marino were named Co-Coaches of the Year. Carver-Columbus running back Khiari McCoy was named Player of the Year and Carver running back Jaylen Joyner and Hardaway running back Jaron Early were named Co-Offensive Players of the Year.

Cairo’s Matthew Peters was named the region’s Athlete of the Year, while Cairo kicker and Columbus High returner Ian Rome were named Co-Specialists of the Year.
