Worth County picks up key win
Worth County’s baseball team topped Crisp County 5-3 on Monday in Cordele, taking the first game of a three-game set that will determine the No. 2 seed from GHSA Region 1-3A.
The Rams led 5-0 heading into the seventh. Crisp County scored three in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but a line out to center and a strikeout secured the victory.
Jack Fletcher went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Worth County, with Hunter Goodwin and Jeremiah Reddell also having two-hit outings. Both of Goodwin’s hits were doubles.
Goodwin struck out 10 in five innings of work, throwing 109 pitches before giving way to Reddell, who closed out the final two innings.
Worth County hosts Crisp County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, and the teams close out the series at 6 p.m. on Friday at Crisp County. The Rams secure the No. 2 seed and a first-round Class 3A home playoff series with a win in either one of those games.
ASU falls to Georgia College
The Georgia College baseball team scored four runs in the final three innings to defeat Albany State 6-2 on Tuesday at the ASU West Campus Field.
Ryan McClendon and Quan Dodson-Williams each had two hits for Albany State (19-16). Jordan Griffin (1-1) went six innings in taking the loss.
Georgia College (31-8) had five players with two-hit outings.
Albany State’s final regular-season home games are this weekend against Paine. The teams will play a single game at 6 p.m. on Friday and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Baconton Charter tops Terrell County
A four-run first inning set the tone for Baconton Charter’s 7-2 baseball victory Tuesday over Terrell County in Dawson.
Logan Cain went 3-for-4 with a triple two runs scored for Baconton Charter. Will Bush, Spencer Culp, Haden High and Smith Pinson each had doubles.
Pinson struck out nine en route to the pitching victory.
Tiftarea edges Deerfield-Windsor
Tiftarea scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday to claim a 3-2 baseball victory over Deerfield-Windsor in Chula.
Deerfield-Windsor was held to two hits, doubles by Drew Dixon and Baylin Moore. Grant Hall went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Tiftarea.
Cain Cooper struck out eight in six innings of work to pick up the win for Tiftarea. Hall earned a one-inning save. Jack Kimbrel struck out five in 5-2/3 innings as the pitcher of record for Deerfield-Windsor.
Terrell Academy blanks SGA
Terrell Academy’s baseball team shut out Southwest Georgia 6-0 in a GISA Region 3-2A contest played Tuesday in Damascus.
Ross West had two RBI and Quintard Wright delivered two hits for Terrell Academy.
Ethan Gay allowed five hits while striking out six to pick up the win for the Eagles (14-2, 8-0 region).
Former SGTC Lady Jets assistant coach named Jackson State head women’s basketball coach
Former South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets assistant women’s basketball coach and Georgia Southwestern State University standout player, Tomekia Reed, has been named as the new women’s basketball head coach at Jackson State in Jackson, Mississippi.
Reed began her coaching career as the South Georgia Technical College assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiter from 2004 – 2006 under former head coach Brandon Harrell. She also played for the Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes and was named MVP in 2003
Reed moves to Jackson State following a successful three-year stint as coach of the Hinds Community College women’s basketball team. Hinds CC won a combined 47 games under Reed, including consecutive winning seasons in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Reed led Hinds CC to the NJCAA Region 23 title game in 2017
