SYLVESTER — Worth County needed less than two quarters Friday night to deliver another statement.
The Rams jumped all over Irwin County with 28 first-half points, then watched storms roll in that ended the game early. By that point, the outcome was already beyond doubt — a 28-0 Worth County win that pushed the Rams to 2-0 and preserved their No. 2 ranking in Class A Division I.
For Irwin County, the loss continued what has been a rare stumble out of the gate. A program that has won multiple state championships and is annually among the gold standard in Class A, the Indians were routed 48-0 by Fitzgerald last week. This time, Worth County did the damage.
Senior running back Kaden Chester got the Rams going with a 36-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Moments later, Treshaun Jones powered in from a yard out to make it 14-0.
Then came the fireworks. Quarterback Lydon Worthy — named the best player in Class A by Georgia High School Football Daily — threw touchdown passes of 55 and 12 yards to Colby Griffis, who finished with three catches for 88 yards. By the time lightning halted the action with 8:15 left in the second quarter, Worthy had completed 10 of 13 passes for 216 yards and Chester had rushed for 73 yards on just five carries.
The Worth County defense did its part as well, bottling up an Irwin County team still searching for footing after its tough start. Chance Sims set the tone with a first-drive sack, and the Rams never let the Indians mount any real momentum.
With Irwin County struggling through September, Worth County looks every bit like a contender. The Rams will try to keep rolling when they host Dooly County on Friday night.
On the Indians’ next possession, the Rams’ defense dominates them, forcing them to punt.
Rams’ Quarterback Lyndon Worthy found Treshaun Jones on a long pass to give the Rams a first down from eight yards out. A couple of good short passes by Worthy got the Ram within one yard of a TD. Treshaun Jones barreled through the Indian’s defenders for a 1-yard rushing TD, 13-0. Another good extra point attempt by Hancock gave the Rams a 14-0 lead with five minutes to go in 1st quarter.
A failed onside kick by Worth County was recovered by Irwin County, giving them good field possession on Worth’s 42-yard line. The Indians can’t get past the Rams defense forcing them to punt again.
As the bad weather comes in fast so does the Rams’ drive down the fiel,d starting at their 13-yard line. Rams’ Quarterback Lyndon Worthy gets to work fast with a hand off to Kaden Chester. Chester dodges Indians making it to the 45-yard line. Lyndon Worthy connects with Colby Griffis on a 55-yard completed pass for a Rams TD, 20-0. With another good PAT, the Rams are up 21-0 with just under a minute to go in the quarter.
The Indians’ found themselves at their own 20-yard line to start off their first possession of the 2nd quarter. The Rams defense tackled the Indians for a loss and Joshua McGee found Indian quarterback Christian Clark and got a sack. Irwin punted back to the Rams.
Worth County is on fire and never looks back. They continued to dominate in the second quarter until a lightning delay put the game on hold around 8 pm. They had one possession before the delay and they made it count with 2 long run, one by Jace Collier
and the other by Kaden Chester putting the Rams 12-yard shy of another TD. The Rams put their last points on the scoreboard with a 12-yard completed pass to Jaquaveon Nelson for a Rams TD. The PAT was good, 28-0.
Just after 8 pm the game was stopped for a Lightning Delay. During the delay the Irwin County Indians forfeited the game.
Worth County (2-0) will face Dooly County at 7:30 pm on Friday.
