Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany back online following tornado

MCLB-ALBANY — After sustaining severe damage from the tornado that hit Albany on Sunday, Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany is back online.

Officials at MCLB-Albany, which had been accessible only to essential personnel and residents since a tornado struck at around 3:20 p.m. Sunday, announced Wednesday evening the base is now open.

Personnel at the base have been asked to contact their supervisors for reporting procedures. Marine Corps Logistics Command Headquarters employees, with the exception of the Distribution Management Center, were called to report to work unless otherwise directed by their supervisor, along with Marine Depot Maintenance Command government employees.

The main gate on Fleming Road is open for inbound and outbound traffic. Those accessing the installation have been encouraged to allow extra travel time due to slowed traffic from storm debris.

The tornado went through the base, leaving a “war zone” path of destruction through its industrial area — which is home to the MDMC production plant. Several structures in that part of the installation were left in ruins.

Power had been fully restored by Tuesday afternoon while crews were working to get other systems online. It is not clear yet how much of a monetary loss is associated with the damages.

Some Marine Corps Community Services entities have been brought online. Some services, such as the Child Development Center, are expected to be operational by Monday.

The tornado touched down in southeast Albany, claiming four lives within the city. There were no storm-related injuries or fatalities at MCLB.
