ALBANY — The city of Albany will host 200 housing professionals from across the state of Georgia starting Monday at the semi-annual Georgia Initiative for Community Housing retreat.

The retreat will be hosted by the Merry Acres Inn and Conference Center Monday-Thursday.

Launched in 2004, the housing initiative grew out of Georgia’s experience with the National League of Cities’ Affordable Housing Program and the success stories that were celebrated at the annual Magnolia Awards for Excellence in Affordable Housing. Since 2005, 60 communities, including Albany, have directly benefited from the program.

GICH helps communities improve their quality of life and economic vitality through the development of locally-based housing and revitalization strategies. This is achieved through technical assistance, collaboration, expert presenters, training, facilitation, consensus building, networking and mentoring, according to a news release.

For more information on the retreat, contact Kerrie Davis, transportation planner with the city of Albany, at [email protected] or call (229) 438-3920.

City officials also announced a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the SPLOST-funded Club at Thornton Park. Managed by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Albany in a joint venture with the city, the Club at Thornton Park ceremony will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the 210 Thornton Drive facility.
