ALBANY — St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church located at 4800 Old Dawson Road is planning its fourth annual Lap A Leprechaun 5K run and 1 mile walk for March 11.
“This is the fourth year that we have done this race,” the Rev. Galen A. Mirate said. “As has always been true in the past, the proceeds will benefit Albany ARC and some of the ARC folks will be walking and running in the event.
“This year, proceeds will also go toward storm relief. Like everybody else in Albany, we have members of our congregation, family members, friends and people we care about who have been deeply hurt by these storms. So we are continuing to aid a lot of folks in need and some of the proceeds from the race will go to that. Also, proceeds will go toward our youth program.”
The 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. and the 1 mile walk will begin at 9:05 a.m. Registration is $25 ($30 after March 1) for the 5K and $15 for the 1 mile walk.
According to Mirate, professional finish line services will be provided this year by A Course/Line LLC of Valdosta.
“One of the really important things I want to tell you about the race is that this year our race will have a professionally manned finish line team,” said Mirate. “They will be there to make sure that all of our finish times for the 5K are accurate and that they are provided in a very timely fashion.”
The race came about four years ago because of St. Patrick’s previous director’s interest in running.
“It arose in part out of the interest of our previous director, Father Jay Weldon, who was a runner, and then I came on last year as an interim and I am also a person who loves running. I ran my first road race in 1983 and have been enjoying it ever since. So when the folks at St. Patrick’s said that they had a road race, I was so excited and thought that we needed to carry it forward.
“It is such a great event, because it is open to all different kinds of people, people of all ages, people of all abilities; and it is also something that people can do with their family, their friends or their neighbors. It is a very healthy positive thing to do.”
According to Mirate, at least 50 people participated last year and St. Patrick’s is expecting at least that many this year.
