ALBANY — The Deerfield-Windsor School Knights capped off an award-winning year by capturing the 2017 Dr. Michael Drake Athletic Excellence Award.

This is the third consecutive year that DWS has captured the title. The Drake Award recognizes the top overall athletic program of the 23 schools in the Georgia Independent School Association AAA division.

DWS garnered State championships in boys cross country, girls swimming, boys track, and girls track. Deerfield-Windsor edged out runner-up August Preparatory Day School by two points.

Athletic Director Gordy Gruhl praised the coaching staff and athletes.

“We are pleased with this award because it reflects strength across our entire athletic program,” Gruhl said. “Winning a few state championships does not result in winning the Drake award. A school must have multiple teams advancing through the State playoffs.

“Our coaches are willing to share athletes and to allow them to compete in multiple sports. That doesn’t happen at every school.”

Outgoing Headmaster Dave Davies added, “Dr. Drake is a former GISA President and a colleague and friend of mine. I am thrilled that our athletes and coaches have won this prize named in his honor.”
