ALBANY — The Albany Police Department’s investigation into the death of a Savannah woman, who was shot multiple times in a car outside of Shoreham Apartments on Dawson Road across from Lake Loretta early Thursday, was continuing late into Thursday evening.

The victim, identified by police as Ashley Boggs, died after being transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

“Officers responded to a discharging firearms call around midnight and made the discovery of a black female slumped over the steering wheel,” APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said. “The vehicle was located in the 2000 block of Champaigne Lane.”

According to Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler, Boggs, 28, made it to the hospital before she died.

“The victim was shot numerous times,” Fowler said. “The call came in at 12:54 a.m. to me. I went straight to the hospital because they were inbound. I never made it to the scene at the apartments across from Lake Loretta. I do not know if she was conscious or unconscious, but EMS is going to do everything they can to save a person. So I am assuming that she at least had a heartbeat when they found her. However, she was pronounced deceased at the hospital.”

According to Banks, the investigation has officially been labeled a homicide.

“The death investigation has now been labeled a homicide,” Banks said. “Detectives confirm that the 28-year-old black female found inside the vehicle on Champaigne Lane was shot. Female is identified as 28-year-old Ashley Boggs. Boggs is from Savannah.

Boggs, a graduate student at Albany State University, will be missed by the university family, according to a statement released late Thursday by school officials.

“The Albany State University family mourns the loss of Ashley Boggs, a graduate student in the College of Education,” ASU media contact Danyelle Gary said in a statement put out by the school. “Our condolences are with her family and friends as they deal with this tragic loss. We were made aware of Ms. Boggs’ passing today. As we try to deal with this loss, counseling services are available for Albany State University students, faculty and staff. We have been in contact with Ms. Boggs’ family, and the campus community will continue to extend its support throughout this difficult period.”

According to Banks, Boggs’ murder is the 12th homicide in the city this year.

“The Boggs incident makes the 12th homicide (in the city) year to date,” she said. “There have been eight cases consisting of 12 murder victims. Two cases remain open, the triple homicide and last night’s case. The remaining six cases have been cleared by arrest.”

The triple homicide referred to by Banks occurred on June 27 when three people, two men and one woman, were found shot to death at 2314 East Alberson Drive in Northwest Albany. So far, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.

Anyone with information about the Shoreham Apartments or the East Alberson incident is asked to call the Albany Police Department at (229) 431-2100 or Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS (8477).
